Many of the more performance-oriented detectors utilize a digital microprocessor as their “brain”. Primarily employed to add the immediate benefits of longer detection range and improved filtering of false alarms, there’s a third benefit as well: the ability to reprogram the DSP chip at some point in the future should there be changes down the road in police equipment. Such detectors may cost a bit more up front, but this ability to upgrade could actually make detectors of this type less expensive in the long run. In the meantime, you’ll enjoy longer detection range and fewer false alarms to boot.
