Detector Invisibility
Most of us don’t have to worry about getting a ticket just for possessing a
detector. There is a short list, however, where this is an issue: detectors are
illegal in Virginia, Washington D.C., U.S. military bases and most parts of
Canada. If you drive a big commercial vehicle, there are federal D.O.T.
regulations that prohibit detectors in all states. The cops have two devices at
their disposal that can detect that you have a detector. They are known as
radar-detector detectors, or R.D.D.s for short. The more common device, used for
almost 20 years, is called the VG-2 Interceptor, built in Canada. A much newer
brand called the Spectre is now available as well. There are confirmed reports
that the D.O.T. folks have purchased these newer Spectre units. There are a
number of detectors that are invisible to the VG-2, but if you drive a
commercial vehicle you’ll want to take a look at units that are also invisible
to the Spectre as well. So far there’s only one that’s cracked that code, the
Bel STi Driver.
